Word Counter
Type or paste your text and watch word, character, sentence, and paragraph counts update instantly as you go. It's the fastest way to check your text against an essay word count, a social media character limit, or an SEO meta description length — all without leaving your browser.
Platform Limits
| Platform | Limit | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Twitter / X post | 280 | 0 / 280 |
| Instagram caption | 2,200 | 0 / 2,200 |
| Meta description | 160 | 0 / 160 |
| YouTube title | 100 | 0 / 100 |
Why This Tool Matters
A student drafting an essay needs to hit a 500-word minimum. A social media manager needs a caption that fits under Instagram's limit without getting cut off. An SEO writer needs a meta description that won't get truncated in search results. All three need the same thing: a live, accurate count they can watch while they write, instead of pasting into a word processor and waiting for a status bar to catch up. This tool keeps every count — words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and reading time — visible and updating with every keystroke, so you can write to the limit instead of guessing and checking afterward.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this count words the same way Microsoft Word does?+−
Very closely. Both count words by splitting text on whitespace, so the totals should match or come within a word or two of Word’s count for normal prose. Edge cases like hyphenated words or unusual punctuation can occasionally be counted a little differently between tools.
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?+−
No. All counting happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript — your text is never uploaded, stored, or sent to a server. Closing or refreshing the tab clears it completely.
Does it count numbers and punctuation as words?+−
Numbers count as words if they’re separated by spaces, the same as any other word (e.g. "page 42" is 2 words). Standalone punctuation marks don’t count as words themselves, but they do count toward the character totals.
Can I check my text against Twitter or Instagram limits?+−
Yes — the Platform Limits table below the counter checks your current character count against common limits like Twitter/X posts (280), Instagram captions (2,200), meta descriptions (160), and YouTube titles (100), turning red the moment you go over.
